"Can I just use my face mask on my scalp for hair growth?" This is one of the most common questions we hear, and it makes sense. Both devices use LED light therapy, both sit around the head and both promise clinic-grade results at home. On the surface, it looks like one device could do both jobs but they can't.
The wavelengths overlap, but the irradiance, meaning how much light energy is actually being delivered to the tissue, is built completely differently in each device. That single difference is why a face mask and a hair growth device can't be swapped for each other, even though they look like they should do the same thing.
What Is LED Light Therapy?
LED light therapy, also called photobiomodulation, works by delivering specific wavelengths of light into skin or scalp tissue. Cells absorb that light through the mitochondria, the energy producing structures inside them, which triggers more ATP production, better circulation, and improved tissue repair.
There are 3 clinically proven wavelengths. Red light (around 630-660nm) which supports collagen production and skin tone. Near-infrared light (around 810-850nm) which reaches deeper for wound healing and cellular repair, and blue light (around 405-420nm) that works at the surface to target acne causing bacteria.
Wavelength gets most of the attention in conversations about LED devices, but it's only half the story.
Irradiance Is the Real Difference, Not Just Wavelength
Irradiance is the amount of light power delivered to the skin, measured in milliwatts per square centimetre (mW/cm²). Two devices can use the exact same red or near-infrared wavelength and still behave completely differently, because one is pushing far more light energy into the tissue than the other.
For facial skin, an effective dose sits around 30mW/cm². Skin is relatively tolerant of that level of light, and it's what's needed to reach the dermis and stimulate collagen and elastin production across the face.
Hair follicles work under a different set of rules. To stimulate follicles without overwhelming them, irradiance needs to sit low, generally 5mW/cm² or below. This isn't a design limitation it's how photobiomodulation actually behaves at the follicle level.
Why More Light Isn't Better for Hair Growth
Light therapy follows what's known as a biphasic dose response. Up to a certain point, more light energy means a stronger biological response. Past that point, the response starts working against you, and cellular activity that was being stimulated gets suppressed instead.
Hair follicles sit lower on that curve than skin does. A dose that's well within range for facial skin, around 30mW/cm², is high enough to push follicles past their optimal window. Rather than encouraging follicles into a longer growth phase, it can end up doing the opposite. This is the core reason a face mask isn't a substitute for a hair growth device, regardless of how similar the wavelengths look on paper.
How LED Face Masks Work

A hair growth device, like Trudermal Halo, is engineered around the opposite constraint. It's calibrated to stay at or below 5mW/cm² and relies on red light spread across the scalp through a halo-shaped design, rather than a flat panel.
At that low controlled dose, red light reaches down to the follicle and supports the activity linked to extending the growth phase of the hair cycle, known as the anagen phase, and re-activating follicles that have miniaturised. This approach is often called low-level light therapy, or LLLT, and the dosing is deliberately conservative because follicles respond best within a narrow, lower range.

Hair growth happens slowly, so consistency and realistic expectations are key. Clinical studies have reported improvements in hair density following approximately 4–26 weeks of treatment, while noticeable cosmetic changes may take several months to become apparent.
Rather than looking for an overnight transformation, think of LED therapy as supporting the natural hair growth cycle over time. You may notice changes in shedding, density or the appearance of new growth gradually.
Taking consistent progress photos under the same lighting can make subtle changes much easier to track.
How often should you use LED light therapy for hair growth?
There isn’t one universal treatment schedule because LED devices can differ significantly in wavelength, power output and treatment duration. The correct frequency should be based on the specifications and treatment protocol of the device you’re using.

Is LED light therapy for hair growth safe?
Red light and low-level light therapies are generally considered non-invasive and well tolerated when an appropriate device is used as directed.
However, that doesn’t mean every LED device is suitable for every person. Certain medical conditions and medications can increase sensitivity to light, and device quality and treatment parameters matter.
